Per figures released by Israel, no fewer than 98 detainees from Palestine have lost their lives during detention starting from October 2023. A rights monitoring body operating from Israel has indicated that the actual toll is almost certainly substantially higher, due to hundreds of unaccounted for people in Gaza.

Recent Figures

The military last updated information on custodial deaths for May 2024, and detention administration by September 2024. Researchers discovered another 35 casualties in confinement following these periods and verified them with official sources.

Despite the aggregate figure of deaths recorded being substantially larger than other recent estimates, it almost certainly does not reflect the entire scope of Palestinian casualties, per the head of the prisoner monitoring division.

“Even though we are providing evidence for a higher number of casualties than earlier indicated, this is not the entire story,” he said. “We are certain that there are yet people who died in confinement that we are unaware of.”

Non-Combatant Fatalities

Restricted government records indicates that the largest portion of Palestinian prisoners from Gaza who lost their lives in jail were non-combatants, per a parallel examination.

During May of this year, a armed services record monitoring all militants in Gaza, a list of more than 47,000 listed people, documented only 21 deaths in detention. By that date, 65 Gazans from Gaza had perished in prison.

Certain fatalities in detention have been widely reported, for instance a senior hospital director who died in prison after four months in confinement.

An inmate detained alongside the individual reported that he was led to the courtyard by correctional officers just prior to his death, visibly injured and exposed from the lower body. His body has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Other prisoners who lost their lives in confinement by Israeli authorities remain anonymous. Detention administrators and defense forces provided researchers with the total of casualties in detention, and basic additional information such as the facility where they lost their lives, but excluding the detainees’ identities.

Identification Challenges

Regarding 21 occurrences, primarily individuals from Gaza, investigators were not able to correlate the few details supplied by authorities to a casualty registered by human rights groups, by means of statements from former inmates or reporting in the news outlets.

The inmates’ next of kin might not have learned about their relatives’ casualties either, as Israel has created obstacles to monitor detainees it is detaining.
