Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
